Fred Lawton contracted Tubercolosis of the hip when very young. He was
bed-ridden and on traction for two years, which left him with the left leg
being much shorter than the right. He wore a built up surgical boot to
compensate. He was a member of Mossley Vocal Society for many years.
He worked for Glover Brothers (Wire ropes) for most of his life.
He is buried in Mossley Cemetery on the lower slopes of the eastern side
