Ann Quade's database of Marriages says that James was the son of Benjamin and Mary Scholefield of Grange who was Baptised 10th July 1763 at St. Chad's Saddleworth Church. (This information is very debatable and I would disagree with this parentage - Rather this James Schofield is more likely to be the son of John Schofield & Alice Platt of Arthurs, Greenfield, born at Road End or Greenfield End, in the village of Greenfield, Saddleworth.

It would seem that this JAMES SCHOFIELD died as an infant aged 18 months in January 1831, and was buried 11th January 1831. Then a subsequent male child was born in April/May of 1831 who was also named JAMES SCHOFIELD who only survived a few days and was buried at St. Thomas (Heights) Graveyard on 22nd May 1831.

NOTES: on JOHN SCHOFIELD - [1786-1872]

In the 1871 Census at Luzley, John Schofield gives his place of birth as Greenfield, Yorkshire. which disputes his bithplace that I had previously of Fairbanks, at Diggle.

This John Schofield, through a process of elimination is favoured to be the son of James & Alice (Whitworth) Scholefield of Greenfield End, and not the John Schofield born 1784 at Fairbanks.

- A John Scholefield son of Thomas & Betty Schofield of Road End, Greenfield bapised 25/12/1784 also a John Scholefield son of John & Anna Schofield of Kinder Intake, Greenfield baptised 17/4/1785.

1851 Census - Aged 65 (Labourer) at Sott Hole, Luzley, with spinster daughters, Ann (38), Esther (36), Selina (26) and Grandchildren, John Schofield (4), Mary Schofield (2) Esther Ann Lawton (17) also an Emma Bradbury (20) born Saddleworth as visitor.

1861 Census - John Schofield aged 75 (Widower) living at Sott Hole Farm, Spout Brook Lane, Luzley in Mossley.

A John Schofield aged 86 died at Luzley in 1872 and was buried at St. Chad's Graveyard on 10th July 1872 (Born: 1786) - Also Hannah Schofield wife of John died at Luzley in 1849 aged 60 years (Born: 1789) buried at St. Chad's Graveyard - 3rd May 1849, also an Ann Schofield aged 40 died in 1853 at Sott Hole, Luzley and was buried at St. Chad's on 15th February 1853.

Trevor! - I have looked through the database that I have compiled and list below what I have found - In the order that they are in your mail numbers 1 to 5

2. John - Thomas & Betty of Road End, Greenfield 25.12.1784 - I have their daughter Betty being baptised on this date and their son John (White Lee) baptised October 1787. However you can definitely EXCLUDE him as he married one of my WINTERBOTTOM family!!

3. John - James & Mally (Margaret) of Diggle - 13.9.1784 - you have excluded - I have a note that John son James & Mally/ Margaret of Slades Barn died 3/1787 could this be the same child?

4. John - John & Ann of Kinder - 17.4.1785. You can EXCLUDE this one - the child died at Kinder April 1785

5. John - James & Alice of Greenfield - 29.1.1786 - As you say this one looks GOOD! - From my notes:

James Schofield married Alice Whitworth August 1785 - the Banns register says "both of Greenfield End" Ann Quade's database of marriages suggests that James was the son of Benjamin & Mary of Grange baptised 10.7.1763 - which ties up with the burial entry date/age below. (Don't agree with this Parentage)

James Schofield of Stayley buried 19.9.1830 at 67 years. Register Entry number 631. If this is the correct James, assuming that he had already had his birthday that year - would make year of birth 1763.

Alice Schofield "wife of James" of Stayley buried 22 January 1826 at 65 years. Register entry number 2102
