1814 - (ID 16493) - Aged 4 years (Farmers Son) at Bowsteads Farm, Denshaw.

1881 - A 'JANET BRIERLEY' (Born: 1834) aged 47 (Dress Maker) from Dumfries, living with Jonathon & Family in 1881 (Find out who she is)

The centre of the Grocery Empire appears to have been Fairfield House which is near The Trough in Audenshaw. (It's now a restaurant). James Brierley lived there at least between 1881 and 1906 and as all the other grocer Brierleys lived in far more humble dwellings - usually over the shop - it looks like he was the boss. It appears that the grocery business died out early in the twentieth century. One of the Brierley addresses had become a branch of Seymour Mead by about 1910.

My own line comes down from Jonathan's only son James William, and then his son Arthur, and then another Arthur, my Dad. Of Jonathan's other two children, Mary died within a few months and Minnie married and either became Minnie Morris or is connected to a Minnie Morris somehow

NOTES:

Jonathan Brierley - Born: 25th December 1837, "Boothstedge", Delph, Saddleworth - Married: Dovina Lindsay, April 15th 1870, Manchester Cathedral
Died: 19th November 1914, 27 Jackson Street, Gorton

Both the couple have their address simply as "Gorton". Their local parish church St. Thomas had recently collapsed in a heap and it's replacement
would not open until 1871. This probably explains why they had to go into town to get married.

NOTES:

In the 1861 Census he is recorded as JAMES SAMUEL, so perhaps a search of Lancashire Births Register may find him under that name.

Occupation -
Farmer - Grocer - Hotelier

Census - [date: 1851] [place: Boothsteads Farm, Denshaw, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.]

1851 - Aged 8 (Scholar) at Boothsteads Farm, Denshaw, Saddleworth.

Census - [date: 1861] [place: 98 Manchester Street, Oldham, Lancashire.]

1861 - Recorded as JAMES SAMUEL BRIERLEY - Aged 21 (Iron Mechanic) at 98 Manchester Street, Oldham, Lancashire. Living with brother Edward Brierely and siblings.

Census - [date: 1871] [place: Market Street, Droylsden, Lancashire.]

This entry in the 1871 Census records seems very strange, in so much as, it appears as though another Brierley, brother of Samuel should be recorded at Market Street, Droylsden. (Perhaps the elusive James Brierley).

Market Street, Droyslden, was an extention of Fairfield Road, Fairfield, crossing the Junction of Ashton New Road on either side. So all the 'Brierley' siblings were more or less in the same vicinity.

1871 UK Census - Dwelling: Market Street, Droylsden, Lancahsire.

I obviously have the wrong William Brierley recorded here as in the 1861 Census he is living at 'Culvert' , Waterhead and his mother JANE BRIERLEY (1779) aged 82 is living with family.

NOTES:

The 'Baptism' of William Brierely in 1813 has his mother named as 'Mally' but this could possibly be Sally. (Need to Verify)
Could this be William Brierley (Miner) age 47 at 'Culvert' at Waterhead Mill Bottom in the 1861 Census

Also another William Brierley living at Culvert, Waterhead, Saddleworth, which also could be the William above.

Lived for a time at 16 Hazelwood Road .Walthamstow

Clarice Broad.

She was the youngest of the five girls. She was not exactly pretty, but very good looking and attractive, with smokey dark curly hair. She was bubbly, vivacious, a bit of a devil, and we were brought up on tales of Aunt Clarice's wild doings.

She worked as a waitress in the restaurant at Crewe Railway station - a terrible place in those days, where the rats jumped out from under the chairs whan patrons sat down to eat. There were tales told of her and the other girls picking up fellows, going off to Blackpool and not getting back home till the early hours of the morning.

From Crewe she moved to Preston railway station, then on to Euston station in London - another terrible place. It was there that she met Uncle Alex (John Alexander Nicholls), who was the cashier in the restaurant carriage on the London to Glasgow Express (The Flying Scotsman).

We children used to stand at the end of Eva Street (Elworth. Sandbach.) to wave at him when the express was going by and he used to wave back at us. Clarice died in her thirties. When she was so ill and obviously dying, she used to say "There's nothing to worry about. I'm going to live forever. Alex won't let me die. But of course that wasn't the case.

Clarice Broad was buried in Sandbach Church Cemetery in the family grave along with her Father Ralph Broad and brother Arthur.

BROAD, Edith. - Born: Sandbach, Cheshire East. - 1870-SA/24/36

NOTES: on Aunt Edith Broad.

Edith was the eldest of the five girls. She went into service when she was 13 and when I (Edna Lysett) knew her she had married Uncle Will, who was eight years younger than her. He was a stonemason working in the slate quarries on Honister Pass in Borrowdale, Cumbria. The quarries are like huge caverns with steep sides and the men work on shelves on the cliff wall.

The family lived in a tiny cottage (which is still there 1999) in Stonethwaite, Borrowdale, with no running water, no drains, no heat or light except from a paraffin stove. She was an exceptionally kind-hearted person. One winter she brought a neighbours 14 year old daughter to Blackpool to have a holiday in my mothers (Lena Broad) boarding house. (Mount Pleasant. Bispham) The girl had consumption and died soon after. The next winter Aunt Edith herself had consumption and we (Lena & Edna) went to Stonethwaite to look after her until she died.

(Note: Visit to Stonethwaite & Borrowdale by Trevor & Irene in 1999 failed to discover anything about Edith or William)
