A Mossley Married Man's Comment
---------------------------
WHAT LITTLE THEY KNEW
------------------------
Private John (Jack) Buckley, of Lancashire Street, son of Mr. & Mrs. Gad Buckley, of the Arundle Hotel, Mossley, is in France with the 7th West Ridings. He writes to his wife:
"I cannot tell you where I am, but it is in hell here, cannons roaring all night through. The village here is a complete ruin. The church is the finest I ever put my head in, but the British had to shell it to get the Germans out. Thousands have been slaughtered here. Some time ago I saw Calvert, Walker, J.W.Nally, and Divney go through our village, and many others. Indians were passing through from 10 o'clock till five. It was a treat to see all the different sorts of regiments passing. We can't get tabs here for money.
"Don't worry about me, It's not so dangerous as you think. We are all right if we keep our heads down. The Germans are only 300 yards from our platoon. Some of our fellows shouted - "Come out and fight!".
"You can tell the singl;e men in Mossley that they are nothing but cowards. They little know how near the Germans have been to them. We came out of the trenches on May 12th after having a lively time. Our platoon has come out very well up to now, only one being killed. We had a great battle on Sunday, shelling going on all day and night. It was a sight I don't wan't to see again. The billet we left to go into the trenches was completely destroyed. We are having grand weather in the daytime, but it is cold at night. I had a good sleep after coming out of the trenches last night. I had not had my boots off for a week. The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter - Saturday, July 17th 1915.
Mossley territorial invalided to England.
Private Jack BUCKLEY, son of Mr and Mrs Gad BUCKLEY, of the Arundel Hotel, Mossley, who has been with the 17th West Ridings, met with an accident in the trenches, and was sent to England. He writes to his wife at Lancaster Street:-
"Norwich Hospital" 12/7/1915.
I am in England with a sprained ankle, and shall be at home in a few days. My accident happened in this way. We were entering the trenches at midnight, when I fell into a hole in the road and sprained my ankle. I had it dressed at the first aid post, and then came to England via Boulogne, and sailed on the Red Cross boat "St David". I landed at Dover, and came on to Norwich, where I am now.
I have come from Ypres, where our lads are in the trenches for 18 days. We had only just finished a big march to relieve the Irish Rifles. The Germans are trying to break through at this point to get to Calais, but they'll never do it. They are Charging every day. The English have taken three lines of enemy trenches, and the Germans are now using explosive bullets and gas.
Our regiment is the "lucky seventh" and will come through all right, I think. The Germans are firing four shells to our one. When we get further supplies of ammunition we shall soon blow them and their guns back to Germany. I cannot find words to express the goodness of the Red Cross people. I have been treated like a King."

NOTES on LUKE GORDON BUCKLEY of Luzley - (1916 - 1988)spouse: Hooper, Vera Alice (1923 - 2000)
LUKE GORDON BUCKLEY was born 24 March 1916 at the Arundle Hotel, Arundle Street, Mossley. Lancashire. The illegitimate son of Amy Buckley and Andrew Reoch of Micklehurst. Although on his Birth Certificate it states 'Father Unknown' , it was acknowledged later in life by both Luke himself, and his wife Vera.
Luke was raised at the Arundle Hotel, with both his Mother Amy and her elder sister Maria helping to bring the child up within the Buckley family. Luke became very close to Aunt Maria and she was more of a mother to Luke than Amy was.
Amy Buckley later married Gilbert Wrigley (Farmer) of Tonge Bottom Farm, Hartshead, in 1920 at St. Georges Parish Church, Mossley. Gilbert the son of James William Wrigley of Luzley Hall, Luzley, Mossley.
Luke Gordon Buckley married Vera Alice Hooper daughter of Richard Kelly Hooper of Manchester Rd. Roaches, Mossley, on 28 January 1942 at St. Georges Parish Church, Mossley. Initially the couple lived at Tonge Bottom Farm with Step-Father, Gilbert Wrigley and Lukes mother Amy. They then moved into the very end house of Luzley Cottages at the opposite end to the Hare & Hounds Inn, where their first child Doreen was born on 11 January 1943. In 1944 Luke and Vera were to be found at 'Stansfields', No.13 Broadcarr Lane, Hartshead, where both son Trevor Buckley, 24 May 1944, and daughter Irene Buckley, 26 May 1945 were born.
On the 1 May 1947 Luke Buckley purchased the business at Smithy Farm, Luzley, Mossley. from Thomas Johnson for the sum of One Thousand, Four Hundred Pounds. Taking up the tenancy of the farm with Lord Stamford and Earl of Warringtons estate.
The bill of sale quotes: The whole of the Livestock comprising 20 head of Dairy Cattle, 1 Young Bull, 2 Horses, the whole of the farming implements, Part Dairy Utensils, Saddlery, Poultry Houses and Appliances along with Tenants fixtures comprising Glazed Sink with two taps as fixed in Farmhouse. The electrical Installations in farmhouse, and Farm Buildings. Twenty two water bowls and piping, Dutch Barn with lean-to, Six Stall Shippon, Bull Cote, Tool Shed and Lean-to Poultry House, Lean-to Coal Shed, Implement Shed facing stable, along with tenants interests comprising; Manure in Middenstead, Manure carted and spread, Lime applied and in stack, also re-seeding. The whole having been sold as a going concern as agreed by both parties. (Dated 1st day of May, 1947)
In 1948 Luke was in trouble with the Law, having unlawfully ploughed up the Cricket Field that was situated on one of the pastures of the Farm, opposite
Luzley Hall. Mossley Brow Cricket Club had been granted lease of the field in ???? but spectators continuously damaged walls and littered the surrounding pastures, so Luke had asked them to relocate on many occasions, but to no avail, so as a last resort he ploughed up the field, and was subsequently prosecuted and fined 250 Pounds for his actions.
Luke and Vera Buckley raised five children at Smithy Farm, their two youngest sons Roy Buckley, 6 June 1948 and Barry Buckley, 29th April 1951 both being born at Smithy Farm.
Luke Gordon Buckley died on the 23rd November 1988 at Smithy Farm Luzley. Due to a thrombosis caused by recent knee surgery. He had complained persistently about bad circulation and Cold Feet and so his wife Vera had been to Ashton Market shopping for bedsocks. On her return! She found husband Luke dead in the upstairs bathroom. (Vera Alice Buckley died at Smithy Farm 15th June 2000)Occupation - [date: 1940_1988]
