Several queries arise regarding this Charles Moseley - In the 1841 Census he is to be found lodging with Robert & Hannah Lawton @ a Public House on Huddersfield Road, Millbrook, Stayley, Cheshire. He apparently met and married Margaret Lawton and they married in 1849 but @ Wortley, Nr. Stocksbridge, West Yorkshire, which is rather strange as traditionally the marriage always took plce at the 'Bride's' Church of Worship. Question is 'Why would they travel all the way to Wortley, when they both lived in Stayley."?. Another question to be raised is: Was Margaret Lawton somehow related to the Robert & Hannah Lawton of Huddersfield Road.spouse: Lawton, Margaret (1824 - 1902)

The Reporter - 11th September 1880 - Alarming accident at Mossley - narrow escape of two women.
On Sunday morning an accident of an alarming nature took place at Earnshaw's, Micklehurst, Mossley, whereby the lives of at least two persons were very much endangered. Four years ago a block of four houses was built by Mr Edward LAWTON. The houses comprised cellars, front and back rooms, and two rooms upstairs. The floors above the cellars are composed of joists and flags. The end house (nearest the street) is occupied by Mrs Ellen MOTTRAM, widow, and four other persons, and it was here where the accident occurred. The back room is used as a kitchen, and on Sunday morning about eleven o'clock Mrs MOTTRAM was in the kitchen washing some pots when she noticed that one of the flags, to which the attention of the landlord had been drawn the night before, had given way considerably. A neighbour named Mrs WALKER was passing at the time, and Mrs MOTTRAM called her in and said "Just look how this flag is going, I can get my hand in between," Mrs WALKER stooped down to examine it and at that same moment, without further warning, the whole of the floor, measuring 12 feet by 15 or 16 feet gave way, precipitating both women into the coal cellar below. The whole of the furniture in the kitchen, including a wringing machine, large table, etc., fell upon the unfortunate women, who were very much hurt; indeed that they escaped without broken bones or even with life is almost miraculous. A portion of the wall between the stairs and the cellar also gave way, and it is a wonder the whole house was not wrecked. The other three houses were very much shaken. An alarm was raised, and constable WHITEHEAD, of the Cheshire Constabulary, and other persons were soon on the spot, and rendered valuable assistance in extricating the women from their perilous position. Mrs MOTTRAM and Mrs WALKER were very much hurt about the head, body, arms and legs; but we believe they are now doing well. The property is stone built and comparatively new. The cause of the accident is attributed to dry rot. Fortunately the other residents were not at home at the time of the consequences might have been far more serious. It may be imagined the neighbours were very much frighten. New joists are now going to be put into all the houses.
**********Mrs. Elizabeth Lawton of 71 Staley Road, Mossley.
The Reporter - Friday, 19th August 1938.
Mossley's "Grand old lady".
Death of Mrs E. LAWTON.
Mossley's "Grand old lady", Mrs Elizabeth LAWTON, of 71 Staley Road, Micklehurst, died on Monday morning last in her 99th year. She was the oldest resident in Mossley, and was well known in the borough where she was held in high esteem.
Up to two or three years ago Mrs. LAWTON was remarkably active and regularly used to visit relatives in Upper Mossley, but for some time past she had not been seen about as frequently and during the past few months had been confined to the house. She resided with a married daughter Mrs WORRALL. She has been gradually fading recently and passed peacefully away at 10.45 a.m. on Monday.
Born in Carrbrook on February 25th 1840, Mrs LAWTON was the eldest of the family of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas MOTTRAM. As was customary in Mrs LAWTON's girlhood she started work at Carrbrook Printworks at nine years of age, and was afterwards employed as a reeler at the Victoria Spinning Company, Mossley, which at that time belonged to the late Mr George MAYALL.
When 21 years of age Mrs. LAWTON was married at Mottram Church to Mr Henry Cook LAWTON, who died about 32 years ago, and is buried at St Paul's Church, Staley. Her late husband was an overlooker at George MAYALL's mills. Mrs LAWTON worked at the Victoria Spinning Co. until a short time after her marriage. She has resided in Mossley between 60 and 70 years. She had a family of 12 children, only four of whom are now living, Mrs WORRALL, of Staley Road; Mrs J. RADCLIFFE of Lees Road; Mr Harold LAWTON of Bottom's Fold and Mr Frank LAWTON of Lorne Street.
Mrs LAWTON was always a welcome visitor at the annual aged people's tea party at Mossley, which she had attended since she was 70 years of age. She was not able to be present at the gathering in August last year, however, owing to her state of health.
Up to two or three years ago Mrs LAWTON was regularly seen getting on or off the bus unaided when on visits to relatives, and she always exchanged a cheery word with the driver and conductor. She also assisted in the housework up to this time, while until she was 80 she washed and baked for other people.
"I have only been to the pictures once or twice in my life" Mrs LAWTON said a few years ago, "but", she added with a touch of humour, "I've had the pound on several occasions at the old folks' party for being the oldest present".
Mrs LAWTON was over 45 years of age, when, in 1885, Mossley received its Charter of Incorporation. She remembered Mossley being previously governed by a Local Board, and she also very well remembered Mossley's first Mayor [Coun. George ANDREW J.P.].
She had seen many changes and commenting on these she once remarked; "There have been a lot of changes in Mossley during my life, and I reckon I had my share of the hard times in the cotton panic. I remember the riots in Ashton, when the military were turned out".
Until she was 90 Mrs LAWTON was able to read quite easily; in fact apart from somewhat impaired eyesight and deafness she retained all her faculties. She had always been a healthy woman.
Asked by the "Reporter" on one occasion to what she attributed her longevity she replied: "I have lived in a healthy place, worked hard and lived plainly".
Mrs LAWTON on this occasion declined to express an opinion of what she thought about the modern young woman, but simply smiled.
The funeral took place at St Paul's Church, Stalybridge, yesterday. Service was held at the house and at the Church by the Rev.Orlando EVANS, of All Saints Church, Micklehurst.
Mourners were: Mrs S.H. WORRALL, Mr and Mrs John RADCLIFFE, Mr and Mrs Harold LAWTON, Miss Connie LAWTON, Mr and Mrs Frank LAWTON, Mrs E. GREEN; Mrs ELLIS, Mr James LAWTON, Mrs DANIELS, Miss Mary RADCLIFFE, Mrs BRIDGESTOCK, Miss Ruth FALLON.
Bearers were: Mr Robert LAWTON, Mr Harry RADCLIFFE, Mr Edward GREEN, Mr F. PICKFORD.
Floral tributes were from: Mrs S.H. WORRALL; Mr and Mrs J. RADCLIFFE and family; Mr and Mrs H. LAWTON and family; Mr and Mrs F. LAWTON and family; Mr and Mrs E. GREEN and Katie; Martha; Fred, Agnes and Bob; Beryl and John; Ethel, Bob, Harry and Alice; Mrs CRABTREE [Stalybridge]; neighbours of Staley Road.
Messrs. J. C. PICKFORD and Sons, George Street, Mossley were the undertakers.

This article in the newspaper about ELIZABETH MOTTRAM. She was the daughter of Thomas and Ellen MOTTRAM of Carrbrook, Cheshire, she married Henry Cook LAWTON, and she died on 15th August 1938.
The Reporter Newspaper - Friday, February 25th, 1938.
98 Years Old today.
Mossley's grand old dame, Mrs Elizabeth LAWTON, of Staley Road, Micklehurst, celebrates her 98th birthday today.
I was one of the first to call upon her this morning to wish her many happy returns. Mrs LAWTON is Mossley's oldest resident, and one of the boroughs most remarkable people. Though she hasn't been out of doors for some months past, she used to be regularly seen two or three years ago catching a bus to Upper Mossley to visit relatives.
Mrs LAWTON has attended the aged people's tea parties for many years, but she has not been well enough to be present last August.
Born in 1840. Mrs LAWTON, whose maiden name was MOTTRAM, was born at Carrbrook on February 25th, 1840, three years after the late Queen Victoria came to the throne. She is presently living with her married daughter [Mrs Sarah WORRALL]. She did her own housework until two or three years ago, and until she was 90 years of age she was able to read quite easily.
When I once asked Mrs. LAWTON how she accounted for her longevity, she replied, "I have lived in a healthy place, worked hard and lived plainly".
Mrs LAWTON is celebrating her 98th birthday quietly among relatives.
